Markets communicate continuously. They communicate through prices, through volumes, through the absence of supply where demand is visible, through the queue forming where no product yet exists. The information is available to everyone. Most people cannot read it, or will not act on it when they can.
The COVID testing market in March 2020 was communicating clearly. The demand signal was enormous — billions of people who needed to know whether they were infected, medical systems overwhelmed with testing backlogs, governments willing to pay premium prices for reliable, fast, accessible tests. The supply signal was almost silent — almost nothing capable and accessible existed. Every participant in that market who could read was receiving the same signal.
Very few people acted on it. Not because they could not see it — many could. Because acting on a signal that clear, during a crisis that severe, felt wrong. It felt like profiteering. It felt inappropriate to be building a commercial product while people were dying. These feelings, while understandable, are mistaken. The commercial response to a genuine need is what creates the solution to the need. The diagnostic tests that existed during COVID did not appear because someone donated them. They appeared because someone built a business that produced them.
The barrier to acting on clear market signals is almost never analytical. It is psychological. The signal is legible. The barrier is the internal friction of moving when others are frozen — of building when the situation feels like it demands solemnity rather than action.
The profound insight is that detachment from expected social response is a genuine competitive advantage in investing and building. The person who can act on a clear signal without waiting for social permission to act will consistently find opportunities that others see and do not take. Permission to act comes from the signal, not from the crowd.
